Disney World Planning & Booking Timeline: What To Book & When From The UK

Working out when to book can leave you scratching your head like the Cheshire Cat

Planning and booking a Disney World holiday from the UK does not have a perfect or fixed timeline, but 18-12 months tends to work best especially if you haven't been before. There are dates when booking windows open and planning alongside those dates can help you get better offers and availability.

As someone who has booked at the 18 month mark and from only a few weeks out I created this timeline to include everything you'll need to do on a timeline that you can use as a check list too no matter where you are in your planning journey.

When To Start Planning Disney World From The UK?

A 12-18 month planning and booking timeline is often the best planning timeline for a Disney World holiday from the UK, but how you plan is personal choice. I use this timeline because it:

  • coincides with UK early booking offers
  • is when The Walt Disney World Travel Company and other package holiday providers like Virgin Atlantic release their package holiday deals
  • gives you time to make choices
  • works with when schools tend to release holiday dates for the next academic year.

From my experience choosing a 12-18 month planning window gives you the following benefits:

  • Better access to Disney's best package offers including Disney's free food and drink offer in the UK, which needs the 12-18 month planning window.
  • Lower starting prices on long-haul flights if you book them separately
  • More choice of hotel rooms and dates
  • Better availability for school holiday dates
  • Reduced stress as ESTA, insurance, passports completed well in advance.
  • More payment options, such as paying in instalments. When you book last minute, or less than 3 months out this option disappears

It's also a planning timeline that works all year round, that you can dip in and out of, and that can be adapted even if you book last minute because this timeline is structured to work with the dates when booking windows open. It's especially useful if you book the UK's free dining offer because you can adapt it to where you are in your personal planning journey.

12-18 Months Before Travel: What To Do First?

The 12-18 month point is key for working out where to start and securing early booker offers on package holidays.

First thing to do is to choose your travel month. Research the weather month-by-month at Disney World, and know when the school holidays are if you have school-aged children. The best time to visit Walt Disney World will vary from person to person. Crowds and busy times impact your park touring strategy, including wait times for rides, whether you'll want Lightning Lanes and how long you wait for Disney transport.

Once you’ve decided when to go, research whether to stay on-site or off-site. Consider the benefit of Disney guest perks if you are planning to spend more than 50% of your holiday time exploring the Disney Parks. If you choose to stay on-site at Disney World decide which resort you plan to stay at and if you want to opt for a Disney Dining plan.

Set your budget and savings plan next, knowing when you want to visit and where you plan to stay as this gives you a starting point for the holiday you want. Knowing roughly how much a Disney World holiday costs from the UK will help you with this, and if you need to pay in instalments planning to book around the 12-18 month point offers a better instalment plan in my experience.

Next decide if a package holiday or a DIY holiday is for you, this helps decide what to book first. If you want to book a package and stay on-site, keep a look out for offers. The UK's free Disney Drinks and Dining offer can add a lot of value and reduce concerns about budgeting for food and drinks. You'll need to decide if you want a dining plan if you are staying at a Walt Disney World resort when you book if you don't book with the free drinks and dining offer, so this is something to work into your budget.

If you are booking a Disney World package holiday 12-18 months is the point booking windows open, offering more date options, early offers, and instalment plans. I advise getting your ESTA, before you book your flights and accommodation.

10-12 Months Before Travel: Booking Flights & Packages

The 10-12 month window is the most important for anyone booking their Orlando flights separately.

11 months

Airlines release flights 11 months before departure. Better prices and dates options are often found at this point. Our Orlando flights from the UK guide shares detailed information and goes into the topic in more detail including direct or indirect flight options.

If you are booking flights separately I find booking accommodation and tickets after this point easier so you don’t have to go back and make changes if you can get cheaper flights by shuffling dates. But you need to be mindful of offers and do what works best for you.

10 - 12 months

The point I buy daily admission parks tickets if I am buying them separately. Buying UK Magic Tickets separately a this point offers peace of mind that tickets are sorted and means you can save up for any Disney World special events you want to go to to: you'll find After Hours tickets are released for the whole year around September time while party tickets are released about 3 months before the event. Buying general admission tickets for Disney World on the gate in Florida is often more expensive if you are planning on visiting the parks for more than 4 or 5 days of your holiday; UK visitors often find the best value in a UK Magic Ticket. If you're planning a Christmas 2027 holiday and want to visit Disney World for more than 4 days, Magic Tickets are cheaper than buying on the gate.

Travel insurance is important to consider at this point. if not sooner if you have booked everything in a package. Getting travel insurance early, as soon as you book, offers the best protection as it often means you're covered if anything goes wrong before you fly.

6-9 Months Before Travel: Planning Days and Crafting Itineraries

This is when you'll be thinking about park days and more about what you plan on doing during your holiday:

Month 9

Get an outline of what your days will look like on holiday, this will help you know whether you want to add in other attractions. to get an idea of how many days you will spend in each park once you have your tickets get to know what you can do in:

Make a simple: day = park plan and include some rest days away from the theme parks. Come back to this after you have booked your reservations at the60 day mark.

Months 8-7

With the big parts of the holiday booked and an idea of where you want to go, I sort out the transport at this point, which includes:

  • UK and Florida airport transfers
  • Deciding if I want car hire in Florida

With the main tickets, hotels and flights booked, a rough idea of how I plan to spend my days I know roughly what my getting around needs are. If you plan to be mainly at Disney World, car hire may not be worth it. Transfers in Florida to Disney resorts vary depending on the airport you fly into.

Month 6

Download the My Disney Experience App onto your phone and link your UK Magic Tickets to it at this point, and have a look around. See what wait times look like, and just get comfortable with it. A few minutes here and there when you have time is fun and less pressured.

Consider Lightning Lanes at this point too, the price adds up fast and if you want them it can take a while to add to the budget so decide if they are part of your plan. Understanding the different types of Lightning Lane available, whether they will benefit your park experience and the cost of Lightning Lanes is all you need to know at this point.

Is After Hours something you want to do? If so at 6 months out you may well be able to get tickets depending on when you are going. After Hours events do not run all year, but if they are on, you can often book them at this point. For any adults not planning on buying a UK Magic Ticket, but looking for a bit of Disney Magic on a Florida holiday, these are worth booking now.

3-6 Months Before Travel: Dining Choice & Details

This is the point where you need to be ready to book your reservations for dining and extras:

Month 6

Decide if you want to make dining reservations at Disney World restaurants or if you want to do any behind the scenes tours or other extra bookable activities in the parks. Make a note of what and the cost.

Month 4

You know you want dining reservations, so you need to decide where you want to eat. This is the point to make a list of the places you plan to eat. Combine restaurants in the parks with the days you plan to visit and note down the date; if you want reservations on specific days, these are the ones to go for first along with the harder to get dining experiences,.

Make sure your tickets are linked in the My Disney Experience App now, it saves precious time in a month.

If you plan to add on extra bookings for activities make a list of what they are, how many people are doing them and the dates you want to do them. A back-up date or complete flexibility works to your advantage.

Know when your bookings windows open. You can use our booking reservations calculator to help you find your date and time. I always set a couple of alarms for the time and date in my phone so I am sat down ready to get booking with my notes in front of me.

60 Days before: Book your dining and extras now

Book your dining and extra activities as soon as you can to get what you want. Being completely flexible gives you more date choice, but it does depend what else you have planned during your holiday.

2 Months Before Travel: Holiday Prep

With mounting excitement, this is the point the travel prep involves packing:

Taking a trip to Home and Bargains or searching for essentials on Amazon can save you pounds on things you’ll end up picking up out there, including ponchos and necks fans if you are travelling in the summer.

Aside from packing essentials you also need to give some thought to your park days. If you have dining reservations, special event tickets or extra experiences booked your holiday already has a rough plan. But this is the point at which you need to start thinking about your queuing strategy. If you are a family travelling with young children take a look at the height requirements with height checker and read about Rider Switch so you can enjoy rides with height restrictions without queueing twice.

Decide if paying to skip the queues is something you want by taking a look at Lightning Lane options. You can use our Lightning Lane booking calculator to work the date and time you can book from if they are going to be part of our plan.

1 Month To Travel Day

The 30 day countdown is on:

If you have been to America before download the MPC App onto your phone as this can help get a shorter queue time through immigration no matter which Florida airport you fly into. Having the app downloaded for the airline you're flying with is also a good idea as you can keep up with flight details in the app.

If you have car hire, and you are flying into Orlando International Airport (MCO) set-up and buy Visitor Toll Pass to save money when driving on toll roads. Our guide to MCO Terminal C is a useful read if you wonder what the experience will be like, especially if you have previously only flown into Terminal A with Virgin Atlantic A who were the last UK carrier offering direct flights to move to Terminal C earlier in 2026.

You'll also want to sort out an ESim to keep roaming charges down, especially if you plan on using google maps with car hire. Pick your ESim and get this set-up on your phone ready to switch when you land.

1 Week Before

There are two key dates to remember at this point:

  • 7 Days: If you’re staying on-site book your Lightning Lanes if you want them
  • 3 Days: If you’re staying off-site book your Lightning Lanes if you want them

2 Nights Before

The quick 2 night before check-list:

  • Charge everything you are taking with you
  • Driving license and passport in with travel documents
  • Print a copy of everything to have in a folder

When Do We Start Planning?

It varies by holiday. I often find myself checking Disney World prices and planning trips, even when I’m not meant to be going. This timeline is designed to help you hit those non-negotiable Disney planning milestones, and offer some insight into when you can actually book different parts of your trip.

We have travelled very last minute and well in advance, and both have their benefits, but the timeline of what you need to do to prepare doesn’t change, just the time you have to get it all done.

Questions About Planning Disney World From The UK

How far in advance should I book Disney?

Ideally 11-18 months before depending on if you are booking a package or separately sooner is better for more options if you have fixed travel dates. This timeline also gives flexibility and time to continue budgeting and saving as you book with option to pay in instalments with some companies.

When do the best Disney package deals come out?

Often 12-18 months before travel, and this usually includes the UK’s free Dining offer for everyone.

Can I plan a last-minute trip?

Yes, of course, just leave enough time to book your dining experiences if the yare important. The window opens at 60 days before you travel and some sell out fast. If dining is not important, a very last minute trip is also possible.
