Visitor Toll Pass at Orlando Airport (MCO): A UK Guide to Saving on Florida Tolls

Visitor pass for toll roads in Florida overlaid on a highway scene

Orlando Visitor Toll Pass is the most affordable way to manage paying for Florida road tolls if you a hire a car from MCO. Using this free scheme, based exclusively at MCO, is perfect for UK visitors with direct flights to Florida and it’s fairly easy to use. Although I made one very obvious mistakes the first time I used it, which I’ll share in this guide.

What Is Visitor Toll Pass?

Visitor Toll Pass is a free hangtag that sits on your rear-view mirror and pays your tolls electronically at the lowest available rate, which is the same electronic rate a local Florida resident pays. There’s no service fee and no daily charge on top of the price you pay to reserve and use your tag. When you return the tag your deposit is refunded within a few weeks.

It’s a scheme run by the Central Florida Expressway Authority for visitors hiring a car from Orlando International Airport (MCO), supported by E-Pass, it’s perfect for UK visitors. It’s legit and not a scam, letting tourists drive through tolls and only pay the price of the toll at the 50% reduced rate offered to US E-Pass holders. There’s no charge for using the service as long as tourists return the hang tag.

It works anywhere you see E-PASS, SunPass or LeeWay signs, which covers toll roads, express lanes and most bridges across the whole of Florida, not only the Orlando area.

Can UK visitors use Visitor Toll Pass?

Yes, UK visitors can use Visitor Toll Pass. But to use Visitor Toll Pass opens in a new tab you need to fly into and base your hire car from MCO because this is the only place to collect and return the hangtag to. There are three machines at each Terminal building exit heading towards car hire collection, but for most UK visitors on direct flights from UK you’ll only be concerned with finding the machine in Terminal C.

UK visitors flying into other Florida airports like Melbourne International (MLB) or Tampa (TPA) can either pay toll costs through the car hire company, or pick up a SunPass. Using a Sunpass as a UK visitor works differently to Visitor Toll Pass.

If you’re Florida holiday begins in MCO but does not end from MCO, you can:

  • divert to drop-off the hangtag,

  • pay the fine for not returning the hangtag,

  • pick a different toll paying option.

  • pay tolls through your car hire company for the duration of your holiday.

For anyone who is flying into and out of MCO, but only hiring a car for part of their holiday, pick up the tag as you exit and drop it off on the way home as it will help you save on tolls while you have a hire car.

Does Visitor Toll Pass Save You Money?

Yes, anyone hiring a car from MCO and driving to Disney World using toll roads (which are the fastest option) from MCO will save money on toll service administration fees with a Visitor Toll Pass. The amount saved varies depending on the MCO based car hire company used, but in 2026 it’s a saving of between £5.96 ($7.95) to £11.92 ($15.90) based on the costs charged by 6 out of 9 of the available car hire companies.

The total amount UK visitors save depends entirely on the number of days spent driving on toll roads during a Florida holiday, as service administration costs are only incurred on the days you drive on toll roads. This table shows UK visitors the savings possible next to select car hire providers with Visitor Toll Pass:

For most UK visitors expecting to drive on toll roads for 7 days, they have reached the maximum cost that’s going to be charged for administration fees no matter how many days you use toll roads during your rental period.

Visitor Pass mainly helps you save money on the service administration cost side of paying tolls. Toll prices are charged in addition to the service fee with car hire companies. This means when you budget costs you need to add in toll costs; here’s an example:

How Much Does It Cost?

Visitor Toll Pass is free to use, but if you don’t return it you’ll be charged £7.50 ($10.00). You link a card to pay for the tolls, which are charged at Florida resident’s rate and billed directly to your card in dollars. (Because that charge is a US dollar transaction, it's worth checking which credit card you’ll use to avoid higher exchange rates and charges).

If you don’t return the hangtag, you’ll get charged for it £7.50 ($10.00). It’s definitely a mistake to avoid, but even then on a 14-Day holiday just driving to and from the airport to Disney World, you’ll nearly break even on the cost of daily administration fees for tolls. LINK TO THE ARTICLE

How do you set up the Visitor Toll Pass? (step by step)

When I fly into MCO and hire a car, I get Visitor Toll Pass, it’s a money-saving essential that really isn’t talked about enough to help UK visitors manage car hire costs. Not only that, but getting it set-up is easy:

Step 1: Download the app at home about two weeks before your trip to save any roaming charges if you forget to connect to the free Wi-Fi in the airport. The app is on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Set up your account, link the card you want to pay tolls on keeping in mind this will be low amounts charged when you pass through a toll and in dollars. And set your trip end date and time t the same time as your car hire drop off time. If you leave the end date open and someone else takes out the returned hire car, their tolls could land on your account. You’ll get a QR code to scan at the machine in the airport when you arrive.

Step 2: When you land, you’ll collect the hangtag at MCO on the way out of the airport after all security checks. Head to one of the vending machines near the car hire counters, for UK visitors on direct flights from the UK this is on Level 4 in Terminal C. (There are also machines on Level 1 in Terminals A and B). Scan the QR code from the app and the machine dispenses your hangtag.

Step 3: Take the hashtag and when you get your hire car, add your hire car number plate in the app. The system links tolls to that plate, so this step is what makes the pass work. Make sure you are still on free wi-fi when doing this.

Step 4: Make sure you hang it on the mirror and don’t tale it off, also have the barcode side facing the window. That’s it.

Returning the pass

Return the hangtag at the end of your trip in one of the return boxes in Terminals A, B or C to avoid a £7.50 ($10.00) fee.

Why Should UK Visitors Choose Visitor Toll Pass?

Visitor Toll Pass is only something that UK visitors flying to and from Orlando International Airport (MCO) who are hiring a car should consider choosing. If you are flying into any other Florida airport this is not something to consider.

Who should choose Visitor Toll Pass

Who should skip Visitor Toll Pass

Anyone flying to and from MCO with car hire

Anyone flying to a different Florida airport like MLB, TPA MIA

Anyone hiring a car later in a holiday with flights into and out of MCO, but not hiring the car from MCO

Anyone not hiring a car

Anyone who does not have return flights to the UK out of MCO

Visitor Toll Pass offers multiple benefits for anyone hiring a car from MCO:

  • You pay only for the tolls you use and save on daily administration charges charged by car hire companies

  • without a toll payment method you use pay-by-plate which is 50% more expensive in Central Florida than the pass holder rate

  • As tolls in the Orlando area are mainly cashless it’s the easiest option

  • Takes the stress out of navigating unfamiliar tolls allowing you to just drive through

For those people skipping using Visitor Toll Pass, there are other alternatives to consider:

  • using your hire company’s toll programme

  • buying a SunPass locally

Visitor Toll Pass is free to use, will save you money on tolls if you hire a car, and makes paying for tolls in Florida as a UK tourist easy and hassle free: I completely recommend it.
