Tipping and Disney Dining Plans: How It Works (2026 / 2027)
On This Page
Disney Table Service Dining Plans cover your food and drink, but they don’t cover the tip, you’ll pay this on top during your holiday at your sit-down meal. And if there’s six or more people on your group a tipping charge is added to your receipt automatically. When UK guests book a Disney Table Service Dining Plan or a Deluxe Table Service Dining Plan (from 2027), tipping can often be an overlooked cost, this guide looks at how tipping works with the Disney Dining Plans in both 2026 and 2027.
Do you need to tip at every meal with a Dining Plan?
You do not need to tip for every meal, snack or drink you get; its the type of service you receive that lets you know whether a tip is expected.
Quick-Service restaurants
Usually, no. If you order at a counter, mobile order, or pick up your tray, tipping isn't expected. This means if you have a Quick-service dining plan, you do not need to worry about budgeting for tips. If you get good service in a quick-service or a cast member goes above and beyond, a cast compliment is a nice thing to do.
Lounges and Bars
Lounges and bars are where the Dining Plan can feel confusing, because they're often more casual, but tipping rules follow the service style, not the vibe. If you are seated and you have a server, it is customary to leave a tip. This means when a Cast Member is serving you at the table, (taking orders, bringing drinks/food, checking in), it's treated like table-service for the purpose of tipping.
When you take a look at the list of available dining options directly with Disney opens in a new tab, you’ll notice that even if the name of the experience is for example the Ale and Compass Lounge which is located in Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, the credits listed are for table service. When you see the table service icon, you know that tipping is expected.
Remember, you cannot use your drinks voucher in a bar for an alcoholic drink without using your meal credit.
Snacks
If you are using a snack credit from either the Quick-Service Dining Plan or the Disney Dining Plan you can use the Disney website to find the snacks places. You will notice that a lot of them have the “Quick Service” tag because there is no need to tip in these locations. You’ll find snacks in places like:
Joffreys or Starbucks coffee shops
Storybook Treats
EPCOT festival kiosks
Plaza Ice Cream Parlour in Magic Kingdom
You don’t need to leave a tip.
Sit-down meals: Table Service
Sit down at a table and a server takes your order, brings drinks, checks on you, clears plates, this is table-service dining, then you're expected to tip. In these locations, the Disney Dining Plan covers the meal, not the tip.
There are however two exceptions listed by Disney opens in a new tab where the Disney Dining Plan does include the tip:
Dinner shows including Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue
Cinderella's Royal Table
In-room dining at the Grand Floridian Hotel and Spa
Character dining & buffets: do you still tip?
Yes, you still tip at character dining experiences and buffets because you still have a server doing a lot of the work, (drinks, clearing, checking in, helping with requests). Tipping follows Table-Service rules, even if you're serving yourself food at a buffet.
Auto gratuity: when Disney adds the tip
Tipping is not enforced in Disney World and it is optional, even when expected, but there are two occasions when you will find that Disney include a tip in the total of your bill.
1) If you’re a party of 6 or more
The official line from Disney is:
“an 18% gratuity will automatically be added to the bill equivalent to the Dining Plan value, for parties of six or more across dining locations and will be charged at the meal in the Resort.”
The advice for larger groups is to budget for a tip at table-service locations, which you can pay in cash or by card, but more on how to pay the tip below.
2) Certain items not included in the Dining Plan
Disney also notes that an automatic gratuity may be added for certain items you order that aren't included in the Dining Plan. This means that if you add more food or drink that is not covered by the dining plan while you at a table service location, you will also be expected to tip based on the value of other items ordered.
How much should you tip when using the Disney Dining Plan?
Tipping in Disney World on the dining plan is no different from tipping in other Florida locations. Tips are expected to be between 18-20%, although you can choose a different amount. As a rule of thumb budget:
18% for good service, which is very common for Disney service
20% - 22% if the service is excellent or you've had lots of special requests birthday help, for example)
If 18% auto gratuity is already on the bill, you don't need to tip again, unless you want to add extra for exceptional service.
What amount do you tip on?
The amount before tax is added is the amount you use to calculate the tip from. When you use Dining Plan credits, you'll still receive a receipt showing the cash value of what you ate. Our tipping calculator clearly shows how tips are calculated and can be used to calculate the amount you would tip using the dining plan.
Example
Your Table-Service meal would have cost: £89.99 ($120.00) (shown on the receipt)
Tip at 18%: £16.20 ($21.60)
You pay the £16.20 ($21.60) tip separately by card/cash/room charge, even though the meal itself used Dining Plan credits.
How you pay the tip with a dining plan: what happens at the table?
When you enter the restaurant they will ask when you sit down if you are using the dining plan, and if you are, how many of the party are using credits.
When you finish your meal a receipt sowing the credits used will be brought over, and it will display the value of the meal, add any extras not covered by the dining plan credits, (for example if you order a different drink), and there will be space to work out the tip as you would find normally on an American receipt in a sit-down restaurant.
Fill it in with the tip amount if you are leaving one and pay for it using any of the following methods:
cash
card / credit card
Magic Band
Can you use a Magic Band to pay the tip on a dining plan meal?
Yes, you can use your Magic Band to pay the tip when you are using a dining plan, as long as you have a working card linked to the account it works the same as paying for anything in Disney with a Magic Band.
