Florida Sales Tax adds 6-8% more to shopping and dining prices at Disney World, Universal, and everywhere across Florida. For UK tourists who aren’t aware of Florida Sales Tax there is that moment at the till when you first buy something where you double check the price. I’ve been there.

Florida Sales Tax is something you do need to know about, and although it doesn’t add that much to what you buy, it adds up if you forget to budget for it, although perhaps not as much as UK VAT.

What’s Florida Sales Tax?

Florida Sales tax opens in a new tabis a type of consumer tax, that is added to purchases at the till or point of payment. Although it is not the same as VAT in the UK, it’s similar as it is a tax that you pay when you buy products and services

Because the Florida Sale Tax rate can change depending on which county or city you are in, US retailers display the price of the item and then add the sales tax when you go to pay. Different states charge a different tax rate. Then each county within the State adds an additional tax rate that means tax is different from county to county within states.

Does Florida Sales Tax Work The Same As VAT In The UK?

No, while there are similarities between the two, they are not the same. Sales tax is added after purchase and varies between states and within states. It’s a bit like the VAT rate being charged at different rates in London and Manchester, and then charged differently again within each county or borough.

VAT opens in a new tab is collected fractionally by business throughout the production process on behalf of the government and built into the total cost of the product at a standard rate of 20%. Florida Sales Tax is tax on the product at the point of sale.

Here’s an example of how it works when you buy an item:

  • In the UK: You buy a £100 jacket on any UK high street. You hand over £100. £16.67 of that is tax going to the government but it’s built in to the cost.

  • In Florida: You buy a £74.99 ($100.00) Spirit Jersey at the Magic Kingdom. You get to the till and are asked for £79.86 ($106.50) to cover the Florida Sales Tax.

Why Isn't Sales Tax Included in the Ticket Price Like In The UK?

Structurally, the US sales tax system is different from VAT in the UK, which means tax is paid differently by businesses and this affects how the cost is passed on to buyers.

In the US, sales tax is legally a tax on the consumer for the transaction itself. The business is merely acting as the tax collector for the government. Because of this, tradition and transparency customs dictate that the consumer should see exactly how much of their money is going to the business versus how much is going to the government. Itemizing it on the receipt at checkout achieves this.

VAT in the UK is paid at various stages of production and is built into the value of the item, so you pay it as part of the price you see, which is why it isn’t added on to the cost at the till.

Technically, Florida law does allow businesses to include sales tax in the admission price. However, the Florida Administrative Code (Rule 12A-1.005) has strict disclosure rules.

If a venue chooses to include the tax in the sticker price, they are legally required to either:

  • Prominently display a sign at the box office breaking down the exact base price and the exact tax amount.

  • Print the actual breakdown directly on the face of every single ticket sold.

Rather than dealing with the logistical headache of updating signs and ticket stock every time a local county changes its tax rate by half a percent, most businesses choose the path of least resistance: advertising the base price and letting the computer system add the tax at checkout.

What is Taxable in Orlando? (2026)

In Florida, sales tax is applied to most items, with several exemptions. But as a general rule you pay Sales Tax on almost everything in the following categories:

  • Shopping & Souvenirs: Clothes, toys, electronics, Mickey ears, Loungeflys

  • Dining Out: Any food prepared for you (restaurants, fast food, food trucks, and even ready-to-eat deli sandwiches from a supermarket)

  • Tickets for attractions: This includes tickets for Disney World and Universal Studios bought in the US. This does not include the 7 or 14-Day UK Magic Ticket bought in the UK before you travel.

What is Not Taxable (Permanent Exemptions)

Florida has made several items permanently tax-free to make the state more affordable. This is a huge win for UK families who need:

  • Baby & Toddler Essentials: Diapers, baby wipes, strollers, cribs, and clothes/shoes for children aged 5 and under (Size 5T or smaller).

  • Sunscreen (UV protection) and insect repellent: now permanently tax-free in Florida.

  • Groceries: Staple food items like bread, milk, fruit, and meat from a supermarket are tax free, but you will pay sales tax on soft drinks and sweets.

  • Disaster preparedness supplies, since 1st August 2025.

How to Work Out Sales Tax Manually

If you don't have our calculator handy while you're shopping, you can do the math yourself.

To find the total price, including tax, you multiply the price shown by the tax rate, (expressed as a decimal), and add it to the original price.

The formula looks like this:

Example:

If you buy a spirit jersey for £56.24 ($75.00) in a park with a 6.5% tax rate

  1. Convert the percentage to a decimal: 0.065

  2. Multiply: $75 x 0.065 = 4.875 (rounded to $4.88)

  3. Add to the original: $75 + 4.88 = $79.88

  4. Total to pay: £59.90 ($79.88)

Can UK Tourists Claim Back Florida Sales Tax?

No, in Florida sales tax is handled only at state and local levels, and because there is no federal tax on these goods, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the airport have no authority to process tax refunds, stamp receipts, or issue cash back.

While individual US states can create their own tax refund programs for foreign visitors, and some have, Florida has chosen not to. The state relies heavily on tourism to fund its local government (which is partly why Florida has no state income tax for its residents). The sales tax collected from millions of tourists is a massive part of their economy, so they do not offer a mechanism to refund it.
