Rope Drop vs Early Entry: Which Early Morning Strategy Do You Need?
On This Page

Choosing the right morning strategy for Disney World comes down to understanding what and how park opening times work. At Disney World there are effectively two park opening times:
Early Entry: the 30 minute daily early opening exclusive perk for Disney Resort and partner hotel guests.
Rope Drop: the official park opening time for everyone with a ticket.
These two opening times are often confused and to make the most out of opening time they require totally different game plans. UK visitors have the advantage when it comes to making the most of early mornings in the parks during the first few days of a holiday as bodies adjust to a 5 hour time difference. Making the most of early mornings, by using a specific strategy for Early Entry or Rope Drop is key to avoiding those easy first timer mistakes.

Do You Need Rope Drop Or Early Entry: Q&A?
Staying in a Disney hotel: use Early Entry; staying anywhere else, use Rope Drop for the best early morning wait time results.
Q: "I am staying at an official Disney World Resort hotel. What is my morning strategy?"
Because you are staying on-property, you qualify for 30-minute Early Entry to any of the 4 main Disney World theme parks, every single day. This means you can make the most of having queue times from 0 minutes in all 4 Disney Parks, and you can choose which park to visit. To find out exactly how to maximize those 30 minutes, head to a park-specific Early Entry strategy page:

Q: "I am staying at an off-property villa, Airbnb, or non-partner hotel. How do I beat the lines for free in a morning?"
You’ll be using Rope Drop, Disney’s word for opening time, so there will already be hotel guests in the parks and on some of the rides. As not every ride is open for Early Entry, you’ll want to use Rope Drop strategy at the park you plan to visit.
Q: "I am a UK visitor staying on International Drive. Do I get Early Entry?"
No, unfortunately, most I-Drive hotels do not qualify for the on-property perks. However, jet lag during the first few days of your trip will help you get up early and be at the parks for rope drop time. You’ll want to read more about Rope Drop strategies for each park.
Q: "I am staying at a Disney Resort, but we usually sleep in and miss the 30-minute window. What should we do?"
Either plan to do Rope Drop for more of a lie in, or get similar low wait times pay for Lightning Lanes, or head to the parks in the last few hours of opening with a plan to ride popular rides rather than watch the night-time shows. If you’re considering using a paid option, head to Disney World Lightning Lanes: UK Guide To Paying To Skip The Queue.
Q: "I bought Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Do I still need to wake up early?"
Yes, as Multi-Pass will only get you one guaranteed lower wait time for the most popular Tier One rides in three parks, and in Animal Kingdom you’ll still be looking to get a lower wait time for Avatar Flight of Passage which is not included in Lightning Lane Multi-Pass. Your best strategy is to use early mornings for Lightning Lane Single Pass rides and any rides you do not have a Lightning Lane for.

Do early mornings really make a difference to wait times; is it worth setting the alarm?
While the impact of an early morning strategy has changed over the years, and heading to the parks for the last few hours can now get the same lower wait time result, early mornings are still worth it. But they’re not essential if you can’t face the alarm. For most UK visitors early morning strategies work well at the beginning of the holiday so whether you have Early Entry or Rope Drop, its worth planning to do it then, rather than later in the holiday.
From my experience, I only plan to do early mornings in the first week and for UK visitors this works really well. This is why from my experience:
For the first few days I wake early no matter what I do; it’s just the body clock adjusting
Lightning Lane Multi Pass is easier to book at home for the second week
I get used to the heat as the holiday goes on, so when I’m finding it most surprising I use early mornings to beat it
Early Morning Queues: Entering the Parks
A lot of people head to the parks early in the morning, and many arrive well before the parks open for either Early Entry or Rope Drop. With free Disney transport starting-up around one hour before Early Entry, you’ll likely find a queue when you get to the park. Getting in the right queue can be a bit of a challenge, and it’s where things can go a little awry.
Getting to the park about 15 to 30 minutes before the opening time you need means you’re at the front of the queue when you’re let in the park and it gives you a time buffer to get into the parks. When it comes to joining the queue, ask a cast member as they do separate people with Early Entry from everyone else.
Can You Use both Early Entry And Rope Drop Strategies Together?
Yes, if you stay in a Disney Hotel you can definitely use both Early Entry strategy and then rope drop strategy together to get the most out of your early morning in the parks. Knowing which rides are open for Early Entry in each park informs where you go at Rope Drop.
Using both strategies is often the best way to skip the cost of Lightning Lanes for UK visitors, but then you need to be staying on-site in a Disney World hotel, which is often more expensive on paper when planning your trip. Understanding the value of Disney Guest Perks is key to working out whether it’s worth staying in a Disney Hotel to get Early Entry. You can read more about the value of Disney perks in

How Early Entry and Rope Drop combined reduce the need for Lightning Lanes
Early Entry and Rope Drop strategies can both be used to target lower wait times for rides. By knowing which opening time you can use, and then targeting the specific open rides you can effectively reduce the need for Lightning Lanes.
Early Entry and Rope Drop strategies do not impact Lightning Lane Premier Pass however, and if you are thinking of buying this, there is not a free strategy that will give you the flexibility, phone freedom, or ride availability this Lightning Lane offers.
Use Early Entry or Rope Drop as free strategies to:
replace the need for Lightning Lane Single Pass over a 2 week holiday with a Magic Ticket
To ride Tier one attractions in Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and EPCOT with a Magic Ticket
To skip Multi Pass altogether, depending on your bucket list rides
The key for UK visitors is using the Magic Ticket with the free strategies. With a longer holiday, more days in the parks, and the ability to flit between parks every day, UK visitors with 14-Day Magic Tickets are at an advantage over visitors with shorter Disney World trips planned.
