Choosing the right Florida airport to land and depart from for a UK holiday to Orlando area theme parks can make a big difference to transfers times and costs, as well as overall travel day experiences. Florida has 21 airports offering commercial flights, but UK visitors only need choose between 4 when looking for a direct flight to Orlando.

The best Florida airport to choose is always going to be the one that works to give you the easiest whole journey, which includes flying from the UK to your accommodation and that matches the budget you have. And that’s not necessarily the airport closest on a map.

Which Florida Airport Is Best For An Orlando Holiday From The UK?

The best Florida airport for an Orlando holiday from the UK depends on your holiday location, travel budget, and whether you’re flying direct. When it comes down to the best airport, it’s a choice of 4 for UK holidaymakers choosing direct flights to Florida:

Florida Airport

Best For Holidays In

Orlando International Airport (MCO)

Orlando theme-park areas

Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB)

direct TUI flight from a convenient UK airport

Tampa International Airport (TPA)

the Gulf Coast, or you don’t mind longer transfer times to Orlando theme park areas

Miami International Airport (MIA)

cruises leaving Fort Lauderdale and Port Miami, South Florida holidays including the Florida Keys

Best airport should not only be judged by it’s proximity to where you’re going on holiday. Choosing the best airport should also factor in:

  • which UK airport you’re flying from that has direct Florida flights

  • your transfer options at the airport

  • how easy it is to get through immigration and collect your bags

  • the amenities in the airport

Which Florida Airport Is Best For Walt Disney World?

The best Florida airport for a Disney World holiday from the UK is MCO because it offers the shortest transfer times, there’s daily flights leaving the UK, and it’s tailored to be the gateway for Disney World and Universal Orlando theme park holidaymakers.

All direct UK flights now fly into MCO Terminal C, where immigration and bag drop are done in a different order to what returning UK visitors used to landing in Terminal B are used to. It’s a different airport experience in the building, but the amenities are the same, if not better for both arrivals and departures.

However, some UK visitors may find themselves flying into other Florida airports within a two hour drive of Disney World. These airports may be the best for your holiday when:

Florida Airport

Direct or Indirect Flights

Why It’s A Good Option

Melbourne International Airport

Direct

TUI package holiday option; you got a better price and flew from a regional UK airport

Orlando Sanford (SFB)

Indirect

Flew into a US airport and cleared customs, before flying into a smaller airport and getting on your way faster

Tampa international Airport

Direct

No toll roads on the drive, flights paid for with points or cheaper

What Is The Difference Between Orlando International & Melbourne Orlando?

Orlando International is the main Orlando gateway and is usually better positioned for Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Melbourne Orlando (MLB) is a smaller airport on Florida's Atlantic side and is particularly relevant to British travellers because TUI currently operates direct services there seasonally from six UK airports. The trade-off is a longer journey to Orlando's main resort areas.

Melbourne Orlando's name can understandably cause confusion. MLB is in Melbourne on Florida's east coast rather than beside Walt Disney World. It’s main advantage for British travellers is the UK end of the journey. The fact that MCO is better located once you reach Florida does not automatically make it the easier door-to-door journey.

When does MLB make more sense than MCO?

MLB could become the best airport for a Disney World holiday when:

  • a convenient TUI departure is available from your nearest major UK airport;

  • your package price is significantly better;

  • your holiday includes Florida's Space Coast;

  • you plan to hire a car anyway

MCO remains the stronger default airport for most park-focused holidays because the main Orlando resort areas are closer, but it doesn’t mean that it is best when you price up your Florida holiday.

Is Tampa Airport Better Than Orlando International For Orlando Holidays?

Not when it comes to distance and transfer time to Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and holidays in the Orlando area, but if you don’t mind the drive I think it’s a great airport to fly to for an Orlando holiday. Tampa airport is also smaller than MCO and getting through immigration and baggage once you land is often faster in Tampa in comparison to MCO. Tampa’s also convenient for many UK holidaymakers when considering getting to the airport at home, as there are frequent flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester all year round.

Tampa Airport works well if you have plans for a multi-centre holiday. When starting or ending a Florida holiday on the Gulf Coast Tampa International is the closer airport. Holidays that combine an Orlando theme park stay with several nights at the beach where you fly into Orlando MCO and home from Tampa, or do the journey in reverse, work well. Popular Gulf Coast destinations for UK holidaymakers to spend a night or two can include:

  • Clearwater

  • Anna Maria Island

  • Naples and Marco Island

  • Sarasota and Siesta Key

  • St Pete’s

These locations are all near to Tampa Airport. So Disney World and Universal Resort guests who book a few days at the beach to recover days of 20,000 steps can fly home from Tampa with a shorter airport transfer time.

When Is Miami International The Best Florida Airport For Orlando?

It’s rarely a great choice for an Orlando-only holiday unless the flight saving or wider route clearly justifies travelling about 240 miles north for around 4 - 5 hours by car afterwards. Miami International is normally the best choice for holidays centred on Miami, the Florida Keys or much of South Florida. It can also be an excellent starting point for cruises especially if you leave from the Port of Miami and longer fly-drive itineraries.

Miami has a daily London Heathrow connection with Virgin Atlantic, so it’s always worth taking a look at this Florida airport as an option, especially if the budget isn’t stretching. Miami Airport is connected to Orlando International by the Brightline, so even if you don’t want to drive to Orlando, you can catch the train and then get a transfer from MCO to the Orlando area, including Disney World and Universal.

Does Taking An Indirect Flight Change Florida Airport Options For Orlando?

Yes, an indirect flight changes your airport options substantially. An indirect flight that changes in a different US state such as New York or Georgia opens up the option to fly with a smaller domestic US airline that flies into smaller, regional Florida airports. This is when airports including Orlando Sanford International becomes an option, and Fort Lauderdale in the South of Florida. The argument for direct vs indirect flights to Florida from the UK often involves cost, but airport location and how this affects transfers is also something to consider.

What About Fort Lauderdale Airport?

The transfer time from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which is a major South Florida airport, to Orlando areas is around 3 and a half hours including toll roads. It is worth considering for Fort Lauderdale, cruises and some South Florida itineraries, but not usually Orlando holidays unless you can get the price right. It is only worth considering as part of indirect routes to Florida, as there are no UK direct flights landing or departing from this airport in 2026. But it does serve many major US domestic airlines, so a connection through this airport is possible.

For British holidaymakers, FLL is therefore most likely to become relevant when you plan to fly an indirect route and:

  • your holiday is centred on Fort Lauderdale;

  • you are taking a cruise from Port Everglade in Fort Lauderdale;

  • your road trip naturally begins in that part of South Florida

  • A three hour transfer time still saves you money.

What About Orlando Sanford International Airport?

Orlando Sanford (SFB) Airport has a transfer time of:

  • 45 minutes to an hour to Disney areas

  • 40 - 45 minutes for Universal and International Drive areas

This airport may bring some nostalgic memories for UK long-time UK Florida holidaymakers, as TUI did once fly from here. However, in 2026 it is no longer one of the main airports for direct UK to Florida holiday flights with any airline. Currently only three US domestic airlines operate out of Sanford, opens in a new tab and one of those is a seasonal charter. Unless you have a connecting flight with either:

  • Allegiant

  • Arajet

  • Sun Country Airlines

This is not an airport that will be an option for any Florida trip. For most British travellers comparing direct Orlando flights today, the meaningful choice is primarily MCO versus MLB.

Is The Nearest Florida Airport Always The Best Choice?

No, not always. The nearest airport to your Florida accommodation can reduce your transfer time, but choosing an airport further away can result in an easier overall journey, even if the drive or transfer is longer. An instance of this would be flying into Tampa (TPA) instead of Orlando International (MCO) for Disney World.

Tampa means a longer drive, but you’ll also not worry about tolls on the most direct route to Disney World and often you find that you clear immigration and get your bags faster than you do in MCO. That means that even though the airport is further away you can still end up getting to where you’re staying within the same time frame.

It’s experience of the airports that leads you to make these distinctions as, so a lot of first time Florida visitors can be put off by an airport being an extra 50 miles away. In Florida, if that means flying into a smaller airport, it can mean a better journey time to where your staying. The downside is that smaller airports tend to have fewer transfer options.

Which Florida Airport Is Best For A Fly-Drive Holiday?

The best Florida airport for a fly-drive depends on the direction of your route. MCO is an excellent Central Florida starting point, Miami works well for South Florida and the Keys, and Tampa is useful for the Gulf Coast. For a multi-centre trip, flying into one airport and home from another can mean you can drive further and explore more as you don’t need to plan a circular trip.

Should Airport Transfers Affect The Florida Airport You Fly To?

Airport transfer options are an important part of the decision making process because the time and cost of reaching your accommodation varies substantially between Florida gateways. MCO is usually simplest for the Orlando resorts.

Which Florida Airport Should You Choose?

Choose MCO for most Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando holidays, compare MLB when a TUI flight from a convenient UK airport improves the overall journey. Choose Tampa for much of the central Gulf Coast or if you get a good deal and the savings outweigh additional travel costs. Start with Miami for South Florida and the Keys, or if you can’t get a flight in the budget you have for Orlando. Don’t rule out flying to and from different Florida airports if the savings are there for an Orlando flight from the UK.

The best Florida Airport when choosing flights for a Florida holiday from the UK will not have the same importance as overall flight cost or transfer times.
