Do you need a Lightning Lane?

UK visitors with 14-day Magic Tickets don’t need Lightning Lanes to get through a bucket list of rides at Disney Word if they plan to use 10-14 days of entry into the parks. The main reason many people buy Lightning Lanes is to skip long wait times so you can get more done, but with 14-Day UK Magic Tickets you can strategically use your time to get lower wait times without paying for it.

All Lightning Lane skipping suggestions in this article are based on my experiences using all 14-days of a UK Magic Ticket and skipping Lightning Lanes.

Is Lightning Lane Worth It For UK Visitors?

Not for everyone, and when you have a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket the need for a Lightning Lane drops even further in my experience. Here’s a look at some occasions and why a Lightning Lane is worth it or not:

Lightning Lane Verdict

Why?

You have a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket and plan to visit each park more than once

Not needed

You can spread popular rides across several visits instead of trying to complete a park in one day.

You want to do lots of rides in Magic Kingdom in 1 day and don’t plan to visit again

Consider Lightning Lane options

A combination of Lightning Lane Multi Pass and free strategies is the wallet-friendly option; Lightning Lane Premier Pass is the better option but a luxury experience

You're visiting during Christmas week, but have a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket

You can do it without; but Lightning Lanes could be useful

Strategically plan days and be prepared for longer lower wait times, or consider using Lightning Lane Multi Pass for a couple of days

You have young children or someone who struggles with long queues and a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket

Could be useful

Although rider switch is a free option for families, Lightning Lanes further reduce the time spent in queues.

You mainly want shows, food, characters and a few rides in the parks and you have a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket

Not needed

No benefit to your day, wait times are often more manageable for characters and shows that don’t all have Lightning Lanes and free options can be used for rides.

Why A 14-Day UK Magic Ticket Changes The Lightning Lane Decision

Using the 14-Day UK Magic Ticket strategically is key to skipping buying any Lightning Lanes. The first step in achieving that is to understand what additional benefits a Magic Ticket has that can help you to find lower wait times over 14 days of park entry.

  • Park hopping is built in to your UK Magic Ticket, which means you can move between the parks. Heading to where it is quieter and wait times are lower gives you an advantage, that you can explore in detail in our park hopping guide.
  • Validity windows for 14-day tickets are 18 days long, this means you can strategically skip typically busier days to get lower wait times such as skipping weekends, or other seasonally busy times it’s easy to overlook when booking such as American public holidays or marathon weekends. Read our guide on planning days and making the most of UK Magic Ticket validity windows.
  • There is no need to do as much as possible in one day because you have 14 days, so assessing wait times and skipping a ride when it’s busy is possible if you plan to use all entry days included in the UK Magic Ticket.

US sites often miss these benefits of a UK Magic Ticket because they don’t have any experience of using them over a 14 day holiday. The UK Magic Ticket is packed full of benefits to keep you on Disney property, but those benefits are also your secret weapon when it comes to skipping buying Lightning Lanes. You don’t need a full park day to do everything when you have 14 days. The next step is to combine 14-days of entry with the free ways to find lower wait times.

How to Get Shorter Wait Times at Disney World Without Lightning Lane

For UK visitors, getting lower wait times without paying for Lightning Lanes is about combining the free options available with the flexible benefits of the Magic Ticket. Here are all the free ways to find lower wait times and how to use them with a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket:

  • Rope drop: Use this strategy when staying on-site or off-site during the first week of your holiday when your body is still adjusting to the 5 hour time zone difference. Strategically, plan to go to different park areas when wait times are lower in the My Disney Experience App.
  • Early Entry: only available to on-site Disney Hotel guests, this is another morning strategy that works especially well on the first three days of your holiday when you are naturally awake early with jet lag and can help you get the most popular park rides in first without a Lightning Lane Single Pass.
  • Extended Evening Hours: If you stay in Disney Deluxe resorts, visitors get 2 extra hours at night in select parks on select nights.
  • Ride later in the evening in the last 2 hours of park opening, just before and during shows: which works when you have 14 days in the parks
  • Around an hour after Rope Drop many of the big ticket rides see a drop in wait times for about half an hour, so worth checking the app at this point in the day for a lower wait time
  • Rainy days: stay in the parks and keep riding by bringing rain gear in your park bag.

Paying For 14 Days Of Lightning Lanes Is Unrealistic

Social media is great at glamourising Lightning Lanes, with reels popping up saying “I’m rich enough to not have to queue”. But here’s the thing, for UK visitors spending 14 days in Walt Disney World parks the cost of buying 14 days of Lightning Lanes is unrealistic for most.

14 days of Lightning Lane Multi Pass will set you back between £157.48 ($210.00) - £472.43 ($630.00) per person, depending on park and date. And that does not guarantee you a ride on every ride or include the popular rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind which would need a Lightning Lane Single Pass.

When To Consider Lightning Lanes?

There are occasions, however, when UK visitors want Lightning Lanes, such as:

  • Only planning to spend 1 day in each park
  • Wanting to try Lightning Lanes
  • Visiting over Christmas, Easter weekend, Thanksgiving, July 4th weekend, or Memorial Day weekend
  • Wanting to ride popular E-ticket rides more than once during your holiday

In these instances, to avoid the high cost of Premier Pass which guarantees access to every ride with a Lightning Lane in one park, most UK visitors will be best opting for Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Then using free strategies to skip the need for Lightning Lane Single Pass.

How To Build A 14-Day Itinerary Without Lightning Lanes

First, plan to visit the parks in the mornings and evenings, leaving during the busier peak period in the middle of the day. In my experience this helps avoid burning out in one park in a day. I usually head back in around 4pm.

Using afternoons to visit the water parks, have lunch, chill by the pool, or visit Walmart is easier with a hire car but fully doable with free transport too. If you stay in the parks, head to the attractions that consistently have low wait times such as shows, enjoy parades, or grab your must-try snacks.

Use the first hour and last hour to head to the rides in each park which consistently have higher wait times. Avoid using the last hour for shows as these have low middle of the day wait times when you’re looking to ride popular rides with lower wait times.

These are my top planning tips to avoid buying Lightning Lanes from my experience:

Hybrid Approach to Lightning Lanes

For many UK visitors, while Lightning Lanes are not needed with a 14-Day UK Magic Ticket, they are an optional extra worth considering if you only have a couple of Disney park days. For example if you have plans to visit Universal Resort or other Orlando attractions during your holiday, then Lightning Lanes are worth considering.

Lightning Lanes are, in my opinion, a tool to consider when you have less time in the parks. The longer you have to spend in Disney World parks, the more unnecessary they become for most UK holidaymakers.

The question of purchasing Lightning Lanes will have a different answer for every family. Most UK visitors with a 14-Day Magic Ticket do not need Lightning Lane every day.
