Getting Around Disney World: Transport Guide
On This Page

Getting around Disney World is easy and everything you need is sitting in the My Disney Experience App. Whether you choose to get around by hire car, ride share, the free transport system or a combination of all options getting around Disney World is easy when you know how.
This guide gives you the inside overview of your options to get around the whole of Disney World Resort.
What Is The Easiest Way To Get Around Disney World?
The easiest way to get around Disney World depends on where you are travelling from and to where. For getting around in general I feel the best option is by car because it gives you complete flexibility and you are not relying on other transport. However, it can come with additional costs, more walking, and you need to feel comfortable driving and queueing around the resort.
When it comes to getting between parks Disney's free transport system can be faster and more fun providing a better option, especially if you are at EPCOT's second entrance. If you're trying to get an idea of how big Walt Disney World is to navigate in relation to UK places head to how big is Disney World to find exact UK size comparisons and how easy it is to get around.
Is Disney Transportation Free?
Yes, the majority of Disney World transport options are free; here is how you can get around Disney World:
Transport Option | Free or Paid? |
|---|---|
Hire Car | Paid |
Disney Bus | Free |
Disney Skyliner | Free |
Disney Monorail | Free |
Disney Boats | Free |
Walking | Free |
Taxi / Uber / Lyft / Minnie Van | Paid |
Since 28 June 2026, guests using buses or boats from Disney Springs to Disney Resort hotels must be staying at a Disney Resort hotel or have an eligible dining or experience reservation at the hotel they are visiting. We look at how Disney's Free Transport system works for both on-site and off-site guests since this change in our guide about free transport.
Free Transport Black Spots For UK Visitors With Magic Tickets
When you have a UK Magic ticket you have the benefit of being able to explore ESPN World Of Sports, and you have free mini-golf at Winter Summerland and Fantasia Golf course. Fee transport options do not go directly to these places and you need to plan a route to the nearest hotel to get to them. It's not easy to get to Winter Summerland for instance, as you have to get a bus to All Star Sports then walk out of the resort and along the road to golf if Blizzard Beach isn't open. It's a good 20 minute walk and not fun in the heat. A ride share is a better option.
How Do You Use Disney World Buses?
Disney World buses are free and air conditioned working from all Disney Resorts and connecting parks, water parks, and Disney Springs. They mainly serve the places that aren't connected conveniently by other free transport options monorail, Skyliner, boat.
Buses are easy to use, just find the bus stop and join the queue for where you want to go. They run frequently, around every 15 minutes and you can find times in the My disney Experience App. However, buses do take time to connect and you do need to be prepared to add plenty of time when connecting to locations using one or more buses.
Can You Take The Monorail Everywhere?
No, the Disney World monorail runs on a system that connects only Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, the Transportation and Ticket Center and three Magic Kingdom-area hotels: Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
Disney World's monorail is location specific, and even if you drive into Magic Kingdom or EPCOT you can use it for free to park hop between the parks.
For station-by-station details, see our Disney World monorail guide:
Where Does The Disney Skyliner Go?
The Disney Skyliner connects Disney's Hollywood Studios and EPCOT's International Gateway with Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, Riviera Resort, Pop Century Resort and Art of Animation Resort.
Caribbean Beach acts as the main interchange, so some journeys have a change here and you have to get out and change gondolas. The Skyliner is handy if you're staying at a Skyliner hotel or when you're travelling between EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.
It is worth remembering that it can be affected by weather or planned maintenance. Disney has already announced that the Skyliner is scheduled to close for refurbishment from 24th to 30th January 2027, with the free buses replacing it.
Our Disney Skyliner guide goes into the routes and interchange in more detail:
Where Can You Travel By Boat At Disney World?
Walt Disney World has quite a few boat options including ferries, water taxis and FriendShip boats. Different boats connect different areas around Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and selected Disney Resort hotels.
Examples include:
- the large ferry boats between the Transportation and Ticket Center and Magic Kingdom
- Magic Kingdom-area resort boats
- FriendShip boats connecting the EPCOT resort area with EPCOT and Hollywood Studios
- selected resort services around Disney Springs.
Boats run on 15- to 30-minute intervals depending on the type of boat, the Magic Kingdom ferry is bout every 15 minutes and is my favourite way to travel in.
Can You Walk Between Disney World Parks And Resorts?
There are dedicated walking areas that link some hotels to some parks, but you cannot walk to the theme parks from every hotel.
Walking is particularly useful around the EPCOT resort area, where EPCOT's International Gateway, BoardWalk, Yacht Club, Beach Club, Swan, Dolphin and Hollywood Studios sit within the same broader area.
Don't look at a Walt Disney World map and assume two places that appear close together so you'll be able to walk safely between them. That's not always the case.
How Do You Get From One Disney World Park To Another?
You'll mainly find yourself either using the free Disney transport system, a hire car, or a ride share option. Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are linked by monorail, while EPCOT and Hollywood Studios can be connected by Skyliner or boat. Animal Kingdom uses bus connections to the other theme parks.
When you're looking for your route options you can use the My Disney Experience App to plot the route from one park to another and follow it just like you would with Google maps. The benefit is that the transport system it links you to is free. I don't hear many people using this and it really is a great free way to find the most direct route between parks.
Park hopping between parks is often best done using the free transport system as this also means you don't have to move the car, but you need to make sure you can get back if yu plan to stay until park close.
How Do You Get From One Disney Hotel To Another?
If you don't have a hire car, getting from one Disney hotel to another is not straightforward and usually involves heading to a theme park to then transfer to the hotel you want to visit. Depending on the hotel you are trying to get to, you may use a combination of bus, a monorail, boat, Skyliner or walking route directly.
Our Experience
I have made the mistake of not allowing enough time to get from my resort to a dining reservation in another hotel. I had to take the bus from an All Stars to Animal Kingdom and then get a resort bus to Animal Kingdom Lodge for a Boma reservation. It took nearly an hour. Now it was an unusually busy time, but I had no idea it would be that busy and I was late for my reservation. the Cast Members were amazing and sorted it out, but I completely misjudged it. On previous trips it took less than 15 minutes in hire car from car park to car park.
A five-mile journey on the map is irrelevant if it involves waiting for two separate forms of Disney transport. For a fixed dining reservation, this is one of the occasions when paying for a rideshare can be worthwhile.
Can You Use A Hire Car To Get Around At Disney World?
Yes, UK visitors can use a hire car to get around at Walt Disney World, and in my opinion this is one of the easiest ways to get around Disney World Resort on your own time frame and get to places the free transport system doesn't reach directly such as the mini-golf and golf course.
However, having a car on-site can be costly because of parking charges at the theme parks which do add up. On-site hotel guests have the benefit of being able to park for free at the theme parks. For a detailed look at whether car hire is worth it of you stay on-site you can read my experience.
Car Parking At Disney World
Car parking at Disney World is easy, but car parks are vast, have their own free transport to get you to the front of the parks and not every car park is free. The cost of parking at Disney World can add-up and taking this into account when deciding whether a hire car is right for your holiday is worthwhile.
For a complete guide on what it's like parking at Disney World including how you can avoid losing your hire car in the car park is included in our guide.
When Is Uber, Lyft or a Minnie Van The Best Transport Option?
Paying for a ride share is best when you have a reservation for dining or an experience, you want to make sure you are at the parks for Early Entry or Rope Drop, you're meeting someone, you don't want to travel when it's very busy at the end of the day when parks close.
Minnie Vans operate through the Lyft app, with the app showing the fare estimate before booking and they are very comfortable. they do tend to be more than an UBER in my experience, but you'll have a better experience.
Be aware that if you use ride share options to get to Magic Kingdom, ordinary Uber and Lyft journeys to Magic Kingdom use the Transportation and Ticket Center, not the park entrance. You'll then travel across Seven Seas Lagoon using the monorail or ferry. So you don't skip the free transport if you're staying on-site.
What's The Transportation and Ticket Center?
The Transportation and Ticket Center, (TTC), is a transport hub and connects to Magic Kingdom. It contains the Magic Kingdom parking arrival area and connections for the Magic Kingdom ferry, Express Monorail and EPCOT Monorail.
When you drive to Magic Kingdom, you always have to take a form of Disney free transport into the park, so always leave extra time to get into Magic Kingdom.
What Time Does Disney World Transport Start And Finish?
Buses, monorails, boats and Skyliner generally run from around 45 minutes before a theme park opens until one hour after it closes, but it varies. Always check current information if an early breakfast, rope drop or late-night reservation depends on a particular service, and be prepared to book a Minnie Van or other ride share option instead.
How Much Leeway Should You Give Travel Times On Disney Transport?
There is no single reliable Disney World journey time because the total includes walking to the stop, waiting, boarding, the journey itself and in some cases transfer times. For anything time-sensitive, allow at least an hour to get from point a to b and just plan to grab a drink if you're very early. If you are dropping between resorts, take your resort mug and grab a free drink.
- For normal sightseeing, treat waiting as part of the day.
- For something that cannot move deliberately build a larger buffer and consider paying for a direct ride when a missed booking would matter more than paying to go door-to-door.
Being flexible and enjoying the different transport types as part of the holiday makes getting around Disney World easier, and helps you to not think of park hopping or going from a to b as a logistics exercise.
