On This Page

The first thing you need to buy in a Disney World resort is a resort refillable mug. Why? Because after 9 hours on a plane and a two hour MCO airport adventure, nothing hits better than a crispy coke. But why buy the expensive souvenir cup and not just a bottle?
This guide explores everything you need to know about actually using the mug for 2 weeks straight, including why you need to bring a dish sponge, what drinks are included, and the hack for using the mugs around the resorts.
If cost is the biggest factor influencing your decision head to Is a resort refillable mug worth it?: calculate your savings where you will find everything about the price, breaking even on drinks purchases, and even a calculator to work out your savings to see if it’s worth it.
What’s A Resort Refillable Mug And Why Buy It On Day 1?
Disney Resort refillable mugs are plastic microwave and dishwasher safe mugs you can buy in any Disney Resort you choose to stay in. They have a built-in RFID microchip that activates when you buy it and gives you free refills for 14 days or the length of your stay. (If you are staying onsite longer than 14 days you need to let the cashiers know and they will refresh your chip).
For UK visitors on 7 and 14 day trips, buying a refillable resort mug effectively means that all of your soft drinks, tea, coffee and hot chocolate is included for the duration of your holiday. They are also included in every Disney Dining Plan option.
What Drinks Are Included?
Drinks vary slightly from resort to resort, and some of the deluxe resorts have Coke Freestyle machines for refills. Refills are unlimited for:
Tea (includes some herbal variations like chamomile and green tea)
Coffee, including deaf.
Hot chocolate
Coca Cola
Sprite
Fanta
Water
Rootbeer
There is a 2-3 minute wait between refills.
What Size Are Resort Mugs?
Disney World Resort Mugs hold 16ozs. For most UK visitors this is more easily worked out as 454.609ml, just shy of ½ a litre of fluid. This means a cup is bigger than the 330ml can of coke here in the UK. It’s also bigger than a bottle of smoothie or juice you can pick-up in a shop with a meal deal, but less than your standard grab and go bottle of pop or water which is around 500ml.
Who Can Buy A Resort Mug?
Anyone can buy a Disney resort mug but they are designed with resort guests in mind. However, off-site guests planning to regularly eat in Disney resorts during their stay may also benefit from purchasing a mug to use.
Where Do I Buy A Resort Refillable Mug?
Refillable resort mugs can be bought in all quick-service locations at any Disney World hotel. There is currently a selection of four mugs designed by Jerrod Maruyama opens in a new tab to choose from, which were released in February 2026.
Pros And Cons Of Using Refillable Resort Mugs For 14 days
Here are the pros and cons of using resort refillable mugs when you’re using them for 14-days straight:
Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
Save money on drinks | The wash station is more of a rinse station: resort mugs need washing-up over 14-days usage and there is nothing to do that with. |
Coca Cola branded drinks | Tea and coffee can be made for free in hotel rooms and free take out cups are provided, so you don’t need the resort refillable mug |
Twining’s tea - so it’s a decent cup | Only worth it if you want to drink soft drinks |
Saves waste | Water is free at the fountain stations |
Souvenir to take home | You’ll walk more to get the most out of the cups |
More choice for a family than buying a pack of drinks for everyone in Walmart | |
Can mix drinks to make your own iced coffee, mochas, iced mocha, iced hot chocolate | |
Different colours so easy to identify for families if everyone picks a different colour - you don’t accidentally pick up someone else drink. If there is more than four, consider coloured straws for children’s cups. |
The biggest negative as a UK visitor is the washing station. The first time staying in a Disney Hotel buying a Resort Refillable Mug gave me the ick after day one, because it wasn’t getting cleaned properly. This meant a trip to Walmart for a sponge and washing-up liquid; now this is one of those odd things I pack in my suitcase as a UK visitor, as it saves money.
If you just want an iced latte or coffee fix, you’ll save money by making this in your room with the free tea and coffee facilities you get as part of your stay.
Overall, the pros outweigh the cons as long as you drink soft drinks, so if you’re getting the mug here are the hacks that help you get even more value.
Tips To Get The Most From Refillable Resort Mugs
Over the years we have picked up a few ways to get even more out of the Resort Refillable Mugs working within Disney’s usage rules, and it all just comes down to a bit of forward thinking about where you’re going. Here ais the list of hacks I have used on my 14-day trips:
A resort routine
This is less of hack and more of a usage strategy, but you do actually get in a hotel routine by week two, so heading to grab a refill on the way in and out of the resort is something we always do from day one. It does not work well in most of the Moderate Resorts however, as they are spread out. And it often involves more walking for one or more people in your group.
Take resort refillable mugs to the parks
Although you cannot get soft drinks or tea and coffee with the cup in the parks, you can use the cup for free water. This hack has limited success for a couple of reasons:
The cups are not leak proof. If they tip they spill which is no good in a park bag or pushchair basket.
They do not keep drinks cool, so you need to fill the cup and drink it, not carry it around for later if you want your drink cold.
Rather than using the cup, I take insulated water bottles from home, but if you loose them or smash them, the cup is a good alternative.
Take the mug to EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios
When I go to Animal Kingdom I leave the mug in the car or the room. When you go to the other three parks there are Disney hotels nearby, and on the free transport routes. When park hopping, or leaving the parks early, I stop at a resort to get a free refill for the mug. I can make an iced coffee by putting in ice and then topping with coffee and creamers, or grab a soft drink, instead of grabbing a bottle to go on the way out of a park.
Yes, it adds time to your day, but you also get to see inside other resorts and it is well within the usage rules of the Resort Refillable Mug.
Take it to hotel dining reservations
While I don’t use the resort mug in the restaurants, getting to the resort early and finding somewhere to sit to take in the atmosphere is part of the experience, and having a free soft drink in the refillable mug while you wait sets up a great night. There is also the option of filling the refillable mug back up when you leave Disney hotels after meals too, but you can ask for a drink to go that is complementary in the restaurant.
Best places to refill
Drinks options are not the same at every resort because there are coke refill machines in Deluxe hotels, which means if you’re staying or grabbing a refill at one of these locations there’s flavour options. There also tends to be a better selection of tea bags available in Deluxe resorts. If you like mint tea for instance, you can grab a peppermint tea as a free refill in the resort refillable mug at Disney’s Polynesian Resort.
Using the mug at home in the UK
Some people don’t see the resort mug as much of a souvenir, but I always bring mine home. As a UK Disney Parks fan, when the Disney blues hit putting a can of coke in my resort refillable mug is a Disney boost to my day. So, if you’re on the fence about bringing them home, my advice would be do it.
The Disney resort refillable mug is an easily accessible way to save money and keep hydrated on holiday. Buying the mug early in your stay gives you the benefit of having all your tea, coffee and soft drinks included, which is a way to control spending if you’re budget conscious.
