Towards the end of the D23 Disney Experience Showcase, the Villains Land reveals were announced: a land name, a backstory for the land, and 2 ride confirmations. Inside Villains Land at Walt Disney World, there’ll be a Maleficent roller coaster and a second boat ride built around Snow White's Magic Mirror. It’s all in development, and the images are all based on concept art, so there’s no booking date yet for UK holidaymakers keen to experience this land that’s hiding in the shadows behind Haunted Mansion.

What were the Villains Land announcements at D23?
Taking to the stage to make the announcements for Villains Land were Bruce Vaughn and Carolyn May, joined by special guest Glenn Close as Cruella De Ville. There were 4 key announcements:
The name of the land confirmed | Villains Land |
|---|---|
The land’s backstory | It’s going to be built around a wishing well that has been corrupted and villains are drawn to it to use its power |
The two main rides in the land |

Disney had already confirmed when Villains Land was announced at D23 in 2024 that the Magic Kingdom expansion would contain two major attractions, alongside dining and shopping. Until now, however, Disney had not officially explained what those rides would be or what the land would be called.
What’s missing for fans is a timeline and an opening date.
What are the 2 new rides confirmed as coming to Villains Land?
The two new rides are a coaster built around the world of Maleficent, where you can expect to be racing around briars surrounding her fortress; the second is a Magic Mirror themed boat ride in the catacombs.
Maleficent’s Coaster
Teasing the audience, it was revealed the coaster will contain elements Disney has not previously attempted on one of its roller coasters, although how Imagineers will do this was not revealed. Concept art for the coaster was however revealed:

Magic Mirror’s Mirror Realm Ride
The second headline attraction will be an indoor ride involving the Magic Mirror. Disney says the attraction will bring together multiple villains rather than concentrating on a single film, but many operational details - including its ride system and accessibility requirements - remain unconfirmed.

Were the Maleficent coaster and Magic Mirror ride already known?
It was known that there would be two main attractions in Villains Land, but not exactly what they would be. 2024 concept art had briers so a Maleficent coaster was expected but not confirmed, The Magic Mirror ride was more of a reveal, but not a total surprise.
Earlier this year, widely circulated reports suggested the project's plans had changed and that an Emperor's New Groove-inspired family coaster could feature instead, while Maleficent was reportedly being considered for a large indoor boat attraction. So rumours were floating, and this was a reveal if you had bought into that speculation. We’d advise always waiting for confirmations.
What will Villains Land at Magic Kingdom be like?
The backstory for Villains Land was an interesting reveal, as Imagineers are creating a completely new story for the land that isn’t set in a film we know. This is the bit exciting for us here at Riding the Magic, how a new story for this land will work to bring everything together.
Describing the land story, Vaughn and May described a “corrupted well broke open”, a “bewitching and dark forest”, but also contrasted this with the idea of “elevated and elegant” theming, showing detailed and intricate character costumes.

Within the land we now know that there will be 3 lairs belonging to 3 different villains:
Cruella De Ville
Evil Queen
Dr Facilier
The visual design has also been in development for some time. Imagineers previously revealed that research trips to Paris and Barcelona influenced the architecture, drawing particularly on Art Nouveau and Catalan Modernisme. Disney has coined the phrase "Conjured Architecture" for the style it is developing for the land.
That means this is more than a collection of individual villain-themed rides: Disney is building a new setting designed to connect characters who originally come from very different films.
Did they reveal an opening date for Villains Land?
No, there was no land opening date revealed, just lots of concept art and story telling information. Anyone who was hoping to book a trip to see the opening of Villains Land is going to need to wait longer until Diseny confirm an opening date.
Magic In A Minute
The big Villains Land update at D23 provided a confirmed land name, backstory for the area, and the confirmation of the type of ride and character’s inspiring the ride story. There’s new concept art to analyse for fans, but no land opening dates for anyone eager to book to experience the new area as part of a Walt Disney World holiday from the UK.
