New Brightline Station Gets $57.5m Grant: Will It Affect UK Holidays to Orlando?

A planned Brightline station in Cocoa, around 10 miles from Port Canaveral, has secured approximately $57.5 million in federal funding, moving the project into final design and construction. For UK travellers combining Walt Disney World or Universal holidays in Orlando with a Disney Cruise Line holiday, it could eventually provide another way to travel towards the cruise port. But the train will not stop at Port Canaveral itself, so a transfer to the port would be needed.

New Brightline Station: Key Details Affecting Your Orlando Holidays

The Cocoa Multimodal Station and Rail Project has been awarded approximately $57.5 million in federal funding, allowing it to advance into final design and construction. This means UK holidaymakers heading to Orlando on holiday are one-step closer to having a train station closer to Port Canaveral for cruise departures. It will be a perfect option for Disney Cruise line trips, if you’re landing in Orlando International (MCO) or Miami International (MIA).

How Are UK Holidays To Orlando Affected By The Cocoa Station?

For UK holidaymakers heading to Orlando this news isn’t going to affect 2026, or probably 2027 holidays. The newly funded Cocoa Station is opening up another transfer option for the nearly 1 million UK visitors who head to Florida every year. It’s going to connect the Space Coast area on the Brightline which provides a rapid train connection between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

The significance of a stop in Cocoa is it’s proximity to Disney Cruise Line, (and other cruise lines) which offer departures from Port Canaveral. The new station means people will be able to land directly in Miami International or Orlando International, and then hop on the Brightline from within the airports to Cocoa where they will only have a 10 mile connection to the Port. This route will open up:

• more direct transfer options

Brightline's Orlando station is at Orlando International Airport, with the station connected to the Terminal C area. Its existing route then runs south through the Space Coast before continuing towards West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami.

Once Cocoa becomes an operating stop, someone arriving at Orlando International Airport could theoretically board Brightline, get off in Cocoa and then complete the final journey to Port Canaveral by road.

How Will The Cocoa Stop Affect Transfer Times For UK Visitors Going On Disney Cruises?

Disney Cruise Line currently estimates Port Canaveral is around one hour by ground transport from Orlando International Airport. The train times for Brightline are not yet known, and given there would be a transfer from the new station to the Port, timings may not shift massively, but only time will tell. Any future train journey will need to include the final Cocoa-to-port transfer time too, rather than comparing just the time spent onboard Brightline.

What’s Happening With The New Brightline Station Near Port Canaveral?

The planned Cocoa Brightline station has received approximately $57.5 million through a Federal Railroad Administration funding award, allowing the project to move forward into final design and construction.

Plans for a Space Coast Brightline station have existed for several years, so this isn't the first announcement that Cocoa could eventually get a stop. On 11th August 2026, the funding was secured to make that happen. The City of Cocoa and Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization say the money will support the new passenger station as well as associated rail work.

Cocoa Mayor, Michael C. Blake said:

The project includes:

• approximately four additional miles of double track,

• railway infrastructure,

• parking and circulation facilities around the station.

Brightline will work with the City of Cocoa to construct the station and will maintain and operate it once completed.

Where Is The New Space Coast Brightline Stop Going To Be?

The new Brightline station will be in Cocoa near US 1, State Road 528 and Clearlake Road, not inside Port Canaveral. The official announcement puts Port Canaveral approximately 10 miles from the planned station. The Kennedy Space Center is listed as approximately 17 miles away, but the current Brightline route isn’t really going to work for a day out for UK holidaymakers in Orlando.

Brightline already runs between Orlando International Airport and South Florida, with trains travelling through the Space Coast on their way between Orlando and Miami. At present, those trains simply pass through this part of Brevard County without a passenger stop. The Cocoa station will change that.

When Will The Cocoa Brightline Station Open?

There is currently no confirmed opening date, on the 11th August 2026 it was an announcement that funding was secured to allow for the station to be built.
