During the D23 Entertainment Showcase the names and ride details for both Cars attractions coming to Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom were shared. The headline off-road attraction will be called Ridge Run Rally, while a second family ride will be Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff. However, there is still one significant omission for UK guests planning future Walt Disney World holidays: Disney hasn’t announced when Piston Peak will open even though you can see the progress of the land from Frontierland.

What were the Piston Peak National Park D23 Announcements?

The key D23 announcements about the progress of the Piston Peak National Park area in Magic Kingdom answered the following questions:

What are the 2 new Cars ride names?

Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff

What is the Ridge Run Rally ride experience going to be like?

Riders will climb towards a snow-covered peak before travelling over a series of camelback hills and through a geyser field as they compete to record the fastest lap.

Is Ridge Run Rally the same as Radiator Springs Racers?

No, Disney is developing a different off-road racing experience for Walt Disney World.

When will Piston Peak open?

No opening date has been confirmed in the new D23 announcements.

What Is The Ridge Run Rally Ride Experience And Why’s It Revolutionary?

Ridge Run Rally is being designed not as a ride vehicle that will simulate a bumpy experience, it’s being designed to give you one. And that was something Jason Grandt was keen to share when describing the ride experience during the event.

Ridge Run Rally will send riders racing through the rugged wilderness of Piston Peak, tackling rocky terrain, mountain climbs and geysers in a purpose-built Cars ride vehicle designed to make the journey feel like genuine off-road driving. Rather than recreating Radiator Springs Racers, the attraction is being developed around the sensation of taking a real vehicle over uneven terrain.

What makes it potentially revolutionary is the ride vehicle itself. Imagineers say an existing theme-park ride vehicle could not produce the experience they wanted, so they began developing a new type from scratch. The team drove real off-road vehicles in Arizona, then worked with a motocross company to build a dirt test track. A customised production vehicle covered in sensors was used to record how a real car's body and suspension respond to bumps, climbs and other changes in terrain.

Disney is using that real-world data to engineer how the eventual ride vehicles move. In other words, the goal is not simply to put guests in a Cars-shaped vehicle and use programmed tilting or shaking to suggest they are off-road: the movement of the vehicle is being developed from how an actual vehicle responds to physical terrain beneath its wheels. Disney Imagineer Michael Hundgen has described it as a "new type of ride vehicle" created specifically for the attraction.

That is why Ridge Run Rally could be such an important attraction technically. Its innovation is less about outright speed and more about turning the terrain itself into part of the ride system, attempting to reproduce the physical feeling of an off-road rally while still delivering the controlled, repeatable experience required of a Disney theme-park attraction. Disney has not yet published enough engineering detail to say precisely how the finished system achieves that, so claims that it is definitively a theme-park "first" should wait for further confirmation.

What’s Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff?

Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff is the second, family-focused attraction coming to Piston Peak National Park at Magic Kingdom, starring a huge Audio-Animatronic version of the demolition derby school bus from Cars 3. Disney revealed the ride's name and concept during the D23 2026 Disney Experiences Showcase.

Unlike the more ambitious Ridge Run Rally, Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff will be a spinning flat ride designed with younger guests in mind. Disney's D23 presentation showed that Miss Fritter herself will dominate the attraction as an oversized school-bus Audio-Animatronic, bringing the character's chaotic demolition-derby personality into the centre of the experience. here’s what the concept art looks like:

The attraction appears to occupy a similar family-ride role to experiences such as Mater's Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters at Disney California Adventure, although Disney has not said that it will use exactly the same ride system.

Disney has also not yet announced a minimum height requirement, so families should not assume every child will be able to ride until the official attraction requirements are published.

The D23 reveal is significant because, although Disney had previously confirmed that Piston Peak would contain a second attraction alongside its headline rally ride, Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff's name, character and demolition-derby-inspired concept were only properly revealed at the showcase.

How will Piston Peak fit in at Magic Kingdom?

Piston Peak is being designed as the next chapter of Frontierland rather than a separate Cars Land, using a Rocky Mountain national park setting to bridge the existing American frontier theme with Magic Kingdom's huge new expansion. Disney's D23 model showed snow-capped mountains, forests, rivers, footbridges and geysers rather than the desert landscape used for Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.

Imagineers are using "Parkitecture", the rustic architectural style associated with America's national parks, for buildings including the visitor lodge and Ranger HQ. Trees and landscaping are also intended to screen the Cars attractions from Liberty Square and other parts of Frontierland, while the landscape itself creates connections with nearby attractions: Piston Peak's geysers continue the hydrothermal theme already seen around Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

The D23 model also confirmed that water will still have a role in this part of Magic Kingdom. Although Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed to make way for the expansion, an original section of the former waterway along the Frontierland storefronts is being retained, preserving some of the waterfront feel while Piston Peak rises behind it.

Most importantly, Piston Peak forms part of a much bigger reshaping of Magic Kingdom. It occupies the former Rivers of America area, with Villains Land being developed beyond it, effectively pushing Frontierland into a new stretch of mountains and wilderness before guests eventually reach Disney's darker new land.

A Disney+ Announcement Too

Alongside the ride descriptions, names and concept art reveals, was the unveiling of a new Disney+ show, Cars Lightning Racers, based on Cars for a younger audience which has a new original Sheryl Crow song. The new song, ‘Built to Last’, alongside Crow’s hit from the original Cars film which celebrates it’s 20 year anniversary in 2026 was performed live on stage.

Magic in a Minute

Disney's headline Piston Peak attraction is officially called Ridge Run Rally. The second ride is Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spinoff, aimed at a more family-focused audience. The rides have no opening date so UK planners wanting to experience the new area need to wait until those announcements are made.
