Every scene in the Carousel of Progress is changing, except the song, as part of the ride’s first major refurbishment since 1993 in Magic Kingdom. Disney have shared that the new ride experience will begin in the1960’s, with Walt Disney introducing guests to the optimism of the World's Fair and the Space Race. That means all four acts of Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress are being completely reimagined as part of what the company is calling the attraction's fourth major update in its 62-year history.

The current version which is largely unchanged since 1993, follows an American family through the early 1900s, the 1920s, the 1940s and a slightly awkward "near future" finale that has felt increasingly dated in recent years. The reimagined show shifts the entire timeline forward by roughly six decades. The refreshed show will reimagine all four acts taking you on a journey through:

• Summer 1969: Walt Disney himself is set to appear as an audio-animatronic, introducing the World's Fair and the Space Race. This will mark Walt's first audio-animatronic likeness in Florida, following the debut of a similar figure at Disneyland in California in 2025.

• The 1980s: An all-new domestic scene set in the decade of the Rubik's Cube and the VHS player.

• The turn of the millennium: A Y2K-era, internet-age sequence.

• The far future: A retro-futuristic off-planet finale designed to remain timeless for future generations.

Crucially, for fans of the ride the iconic Sherman Brothers song "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" will be kept. The rotating theatre mechanism, the 240-person capacity all remain. What's gone is the turn-of-the-century scene, the 1920s Easter Sunday sequence, and the 1940s fireworks finale that generations of Disney visitors have come to know.

By changing the current version some returning UK Disney Parks fans feel there is a significant loss, as the ride offers those nostalgic Disney World feels. The story of the current version was shaped directly by Walt Disney who personally reviewed scenes and even refined jokes. A clearer timeline would be nice for fans who are wondering when they will get to experience this ride again, however the vague date of 2027 is inline with how Disney have been revealing timelines when rides are reimagined. So there is nothing to read into it, from our perspective. Whether the park will acknowledge the historic significance of this ride’s transition, beyond the new attraction poster, is what is yet unclear and would perhaps be welcome given how connected the Carousel of Progress is with Walt Disney.

In my opinion, Disney is making the right long-term decision to update the ride. A version frozen in 1993 needed updating, but removing so much of the original's timeline removes the direct link to the world Walt Disney grew up in. This is the loss I am as yet undecided about.

Where you can sit down, just take in the entertainment without the threat of participation, get in the attraction without a long wait most days, and sit in a darkened space to recharge for a while.
