If your January plans involve collapsing onto the sofa and working your way through a Harry Potter marathon, we've got some unwelcome news. As of 1st January, all eight Harry Potter films, plus the three Fantastic Beasts spin-offs, have officially been removed from Netflix UK.
For many fans, the Wizarding World has become a go-to comfort watch over the years and with the longest month staring us down, the timing of this loss feels particularly cruel.

What's Been Removed from Netflix UK?
As of New Year's Day, Netflix in the UK no longer carries:
All eight Harry Potter films
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
This follows the recent removal of Friends, leaving many subscribers feeling like several of those comforting classics that many Millennials love to cosy up and binge watch have vanished at once.
Can You Watch Harry Potter on Disney Plus?
No, none of the films from the Harry Potter franchise are available on Disney Plus in the UK.
Despite frequent confusion, the Harry Potter franchise is owned by Warner Bros., not Disney. That means the films won't be heading to Disney Plus now or in the future under the current licensing set-up.
So if you were hoping for a quick switch from Netflix to Disney Plus, unfortunately, that's not an option.
Why Have the Films Been Removed?
The change comes as part of a wider wave of licensing expirations affecting Netflix's catalogue. Major studios are increasingly pulling their biggest franchises from third-party platforms to prepare for their own streaming services.
In this case, many fans believe the timing is linked to Warner Bros.' long-term plans for the Wizarding World, including its upcoming Harry Potter TV series which is facing a mixed reception so far.
Where Can You Watch Harry Potter in the UK Right Now?
For the moment, your options are limited.
In the UK, the Harry Potter films are currently only available to rent or buy digitally on selected platforms. There's no subscription service offering the full collection as part of a monthly plan right now. You can digitally rent or buy the films from:
Amazon Prime, with the Philosophers Stone starting at £3.49 to
Sky Store: with buy and keep prices starting at £7.99 and rental starting at £3.49
Apple TV with rentals starting at £3.49
Even this is limited, but that may change later this year.
Is Harry Potter Likely to Move to HBO Max?
Warner Bros. is expected to launch HBO Max in the UK, and when it does, the Harry Potter films are widely expected to become part of its core library.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, the Netflix removal strongly suggests the Wizarding World is being positioned for a new long-term streaming home.
Magic in a Minute
Harry Potter has left Netflix UK and is not available on Disney Plus. For now, the films can only be rented or bought - but a move to HBO Max later this year looks increasingly likely.
Not quite the spell we wanted to start the year with.
