Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen at Magic Kingdom on 3 May 2026. The ride returns with new effects, including Rainbow Caverns, and Disney says the minimum height will drop from 40 inches to 38 inches, or from 102cm to 97cm. For UK families heading out to Disney World for a family holiday this summer it is a change worth noting, as this might impact your Magic Kingdom planning and itinerary.

Worth riding?: This was always a ride worth doing, but with the new changes Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a ride you won’t want to miss when it reopens.

Big Thunder Mountain reopens in Magic Kingdom on 3 May 2026

Disney has confirmed that fan favourite ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reopen at Magic Kingdom on 3rd May 2026, ending months of uncertainty for holidaymakers who had previously only been told the attraction would return in spring 2026. The classic Frontierland coaster will reopen with what Disney describe as "new magic", including refreshed effects, and joins a summer season line-up beginning in May of new and refurbished ride openings.

Even Disney Parks are playing on the new summer season of openings with their release date drop on social media:

How is the ride experience changing?

The ride has been through a lengthy refurbishment period and has been closed since 2024. The new ride is designed to be smoother, more comfortable, has new scenes, and a new lower height restriction making it more family friendly. The exact changes include:

  • Changes to the Rainbow Caverns scene

  • New height requirement

  • New ride vehicles

  • New track

This means it should be like experiencing it for the first time all over again! This is perfect for both first-time visitors, who won’t remember the old bine=shaking experience, an returning UK visitors who get the thrill of a new ride experience all over again.

Height requirement changes in cm for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

The height requirement for the ride will drop by 2 inches (5cm) from 102cm (40 inches) to 97cm (38 inches) when the ride reopens on 3rd May 2026. This is not a huge drop, but it is significant for UK families as the reduction means more children will be able to ride.

How can Disney change the height requirement on a ride?

The ride has had both a track and vehicle renewal, which means that the ride experience is going to be different. Ride heights are usually set by the ride manufacturer, so this may have something to do with the change.

Vekoma are the manufacturer responsible for the new track, which is going tot be wider and provide a smoother overall experience. Hopefully no more coming off after sliding into the person next to you all ride. Whereas the previous track was built by Arrow Dynamics, opening in November 1980.

The complete replacement of the track, newer technology, and a new designer is likely the biggest contributing factor to the height requirement change. With significant ride vehicle and track changes the ride height would need to be checked again, and it appears it could be altered. Disney Parks Blog said:

"With all the improvements made to the attraction, along with a comprehensive review from our safety teams, Big Thunder Mountain will reopen with a lowered height requirement of 38”"

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

This height requirement change means that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad now has the same 38 inch or 97cm height restriction as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This is an interesting change for families as it suggests that the ride experience may be similar. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is also a coaster that was manufactured by Vekoma, meaning there is now another similarity between these rides.

How the reopening affects UK family bookings

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is one of Magic Kingdom's signature family coasters and a key Frontierland attraction. For many visitors, especially those travelling from the UK and wanting to make the most of a once-a-year or once-every-few-years trip, knowing it will be back from May 2026 makes a real difference.

With the current 3 nights free offer and 20% off Magic Tickets for arrivals between 28th June and 7th September, when booked by 26th August this ride opening may encourage last minute 2026 bookings. The reopening of a big coaster at a time when Magic Kingdom is undergoing construction work with construction walls up does act as an incentive to book, as it feels as if there is more value in the Disney World experience.

Why change your itinerary to ride Big Thunder Mountain?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride has been closed since January 2025, so it has been a long wait for the “wildest ride in the wilderness” to return to Magic Kingdom. The new height change is significant for UK families planning their Magic Kingdom itineraries for upcoming trips. Rather than needing to use Rider Switch, some children will now have the opportunity to ride, which adds an extra layer of excitement to the holiday. Where parents may have considered skipping this attraction; they can now enjoy the new thrills.

Magic Kingdom is about to reopen a fan favourite ride, with a new height restriction that changes how UK families will plan their day.
