Tron: Ares is the third film in the iconic digital-world blockbuster franchise that is now heading for home viewing. If you have an Amazon Prime TV account, you may have noticed the movie available to purchase or rent on digital platforms today. But the question on everyone’s lips is when is Tron: Ares coming to Disney+?

Tron On Disney Plus

Tron: Ares premiered in cinemas on 10 October 2025 and as of now, it is not streaming on Disney+. The trailer is available to watch and so are the other two Tron films:

  • Tron (1982)

  • Tron Legacy (2010)

As well as the animated series Tron Uprising (2012).

The current Tron: Ares film is available for digital purchase or rental starting 2 December 2025, through Prime Video and Apple TV. A 4K digital download from either service will currently cost £19.99. Here’s the download release trailer:

A physical release (4K Blu-ray/DVD) is scheduled for 6 January 2026.

When might Tron: Ares hit Disney+?

While there's no official Disney+ premiere date, sources that track Disney's release patterns expect it to arrive on streaming in early 2026. Expect it to arrive around late December 2025 or early January 2026, roughly coinciding with the film's physical media release of 6th January 2026. It is expected that at this point the film will be free for Disney+ subscribers.

This aligns with recent Disney films: typically, a movie hits Premium Video-on-Demand (digital rent/buy) first, then arrives on Disney+ a while later, usually between 1 and 3 months.

What is "Tron: Ares" about?

In "Tron: Ares", a highly advanced Program named Ares is sent from the digital realm into the real world marking humanity's first direct encounter with an artificial-intelligence being.

The film reunites returning star Jeff Bridges with new cast members such as Jared Leto, and showcases a darker, more intense aesthetic than previous "Tron" instalments, including a gritty yet futuristic soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails.

Why Tron: Ares arriving for home viewing matters

The early December digital release makes "Tron: Ares" a solid pick for the festive streaming this December, and it would have been a great addition to the Disney+ festive December line-up too.

At this time of year, people are thinking of a movie night and the Tron franchise is a good bingeable choice, although the first Tron may be a bit lack lustre for younger viewers expecting high end graphics. It’s easy to catch up on the whole franchise’ previous "Tron" films for free if you have a subscription to Disney+. Then you can add in the download if you can’t wait until the end of the month or beginning of next year.

For Disney fans lucky enough to be heading to Walt Disney World on a trip this December downloading Tron: Ares for the plane as well as the other two free Tron films could be a great way to spend your flight. It’ll get you in the mood for your ride on Tron in Magic Kingdom, which is still showcasing the Tron: Ares overlay.

The release of Tron: Ares is great for both park-goers and streamers this December. The new overlay gives fans at the parks a different flavour of Tron energy, while the film offers a modern, intense sci-fi twist on the classic.

What's happening with the red "Tron" overlay at the parks

The buzz around "Tron: Ares" has also reached theme-park fans. The attraction TRON Lightcycle / Run at Magic Kingdom (Walt Disney World) was updated with a limited-time "Tron: Ares" overlay beginning 15 September 2025. It also has a red overlay in Disneyland Shanghai which began on 16th September 2025.

That update includes a bold shift from the usual blue-and-orange grid aesthetic to red and orange lighting, along with a new ambience courtesy of Nine Inch Nails' soundtrack. The ride currently has a grittier, more futuristic vibe in line with the film. Check out the launch sequence below courtesy of coaster-studios reel on Instagram:

Disney has not currently announced how long the overlay will remain in place. Here at Riding the Magic we have a sneaking suspicion that the overlay will last until the end of the year, with a final week to possibly coincide with the release of the film on Disney Plus. In our opinion, this will likely be around 6th January 2026.

Many expect that the overlay is going to last through the holiday season, but that remains speculation, so if you’re heading to Disney World this December, make sure you try Tron Lightcycle / Run in red while you can, as well as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith, another ride which is changing fast.
