Orlando flights continue to operate for UK travellers despite U.S. shutdown restrictions. So far, only US internal flights have been affected by the reductions in flights, and not international flights.
FAA Take Action
It is now day 38 of the shutdown and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered a 10% cutback in domestic U.S. flights at 40 airports across the USA. This includes Orlando International Airport (MCO). The cut backs are the result of continuing staffing shortages linked to the ongoing federal government shutdown. This comes on the back of recent delays which have had a huge impact on many US airports.
The order, which takes affect on Friday 7th November 2025, aims to reduce strain on the National Airspace System and maintain safety levels while some air traffic controllers remain unpaid or unavailable for work.
Orlando’s International Route Stable
Despite the cutback, international flights to and from Orlando. including flights from all UK airports, are currently unaffected.
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) confirmed that federal employees at the airport “continue to work”, and that airport operations remain stable for now.
However, domestic U.S. connections may see reduced schedules, potential delays, or cancellations.
Any travellers connecting through major hubs such as Atlanta, New York or Chicago are being advised to check with their airlines before departure and to prepare for potential delays.
More Flights Could Be Affected
In a statement, the FAA said the temporary reduction will “slow the rate of activity” to help airports handle staffing challenges while “maintaining the highest level of safety”.
Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy warned that flight cutbacks could increase when speaking with Fox News. He said:
"If this shutdown doesn’t end relatively soon, the consequence of that is going to be more controllers don’t come to work and then we’re going to have to continue to assess the pressure in the airspace and make decisions that may again move us from 10% to 15%, maybe to 20%."
Duffy continued to comment that even when the shutdown ends, delays could linger on. He said:
"It can take days - if not a week - before we get back to full force flights."
What UK Travellers Need To Know
Flights from the UK are continuing as scheduled and are so far unaffected. However, any travelling internally within the US to get to Walt Disney World needs to keep checking their app to see if their flights are still operating or delayed.
Be patient when landing in the US, as border staff have not seen a pay cheque for over a month. Remember there are delays within the airport ecosystem even though international flights are unaffected so far.
When returning home to the UK, be sure to leave a little extra time for clearing security, as this is also affected.
Magic In A Minute
UK holiday flights to Orlando are still running, but if your trip includes any domestic connections within the US, double-check your itinerary before you travel.
