For UK Disney travellers, there is a notable change coming to one of the more useful direct Florida flight options outside of using the Orlando International Airport (MCO) route. From 25th October 2026, British Airways will move its direct Tampa International Airport (TPA) route from London Gatwick (LGW) to London Heathrow (LHR). At the same time, the airline will also reduce the service from daily to five flights a week, change planes, and reduce passenger capacity.
For anyone planning a Walt Disney World holiday and weighing up the best Florida flights from the UK, this is a route update worth paying attention to.

BA's Direct Tampa Service Is Switching From Gatwick To Heathrow
The route change comes into effect on Sunday 25th October 2026, and it is not a temporary shuffle. This is a permanent airport change, giving travellers a different London departure point as well as a different onboard experience.
Key changes to know:
route is moving to Heathrow
aircraft is changing
passenger capacity is reducing
service is dropping from daily to five times weekly
change starts on 25th October 2026
BA LHR to TPA: New Flight Schedule From October 2026
From 25th October 2026, the new British Airways LHR to TPA route will operate as follows:
BA211 London Heathrow to Tampa
Departs LHR: 12:45 PM
Arrives TPA: 5:30 PM
BA210 Tampa to London Heathrow
Departs TPA: 7:55 PM
Arrives LHR: 9:15 AM (the following day).
The route will operate on:
Mondays
Wednesdays
Thursdays
Saturdays
Sundays
So, while BA is keeping a direct Tampa option, it is no longer maintaining a seven-day-a-week operation.
The 4,411-mile direct flight to Tampa is scheduled to take 9 hours 45 minutes, while the return flight to London Heathrow is scheduled at 8 hours 20 minutes.
British Airways Reduces Tampa Flights From Daily To 5 Times Weekly
The change in flight frequency matters most to Disney World planners as it reduces options. Right now, having a daily service gives travellers more flexibility when building a holiday around school dates, villa check-ins, time off work and other commitments that reduce the flexibility you have when picking a holiday departure date. Once the route switches to Heathrow, BA will cut that flexibility back, operating only five times weekly.
If you’re planning Disney World flights from the UK, the key takeaway is this:
from 25th October 2026, you will not be able to fly direct to Tampa with British Airways every day.
That may not sound like a huge reduction on paper, but it does matter. Fewer weekly flights can mean fewer ideal travel date combinations, less flexibility for shorter trips, and potentially less room to manoeuvre if fares rise on the most popular departure days. However, as British Airways is moving to Heathrow Airport, Virgin Atlantic will cover that reduction in availability as they operate a direct route to Tampa International Airport daily.
A Change in Plane: From Boeing 777-200ER To Boeing 787-10
There is, however, a genuine positive that is coming with the move. The current Tampa route from Gatwick operates using a Boeing 777-200ER; the new Heathrow service will use a Boeing 787-10 instead. The current Gatwick route planes have more capacity, but an older onboard feel; the Heathrow route planes will have a newer feel, but less capacity. Here are some of the differences you can expect:
In-flight feature | Boeing 777-200ER | Boeing 787-10 |
|---|---|---|
Overall feel | Older long-haul aircraft in BA's fleet | BA's fleet Newer-generation aircraft with a more modern feel |
Cabin comfort | Standard long-haul comfort | Higher humidity and lower cabin pressurisation, designed to help passengers feel more comfortable on long flights |
Windows | Standard widebody windows | Larger windows, with adjustable dimming |
Noise | As expected for older planes | Quieter cabin |
Business Class | Varies depending on aircraft | Features its newer Club Suite |
Passenger capacity | Up to 336 passengers | 256 passengers |
The Boeing 787-10 should deliver the better onboard experience overall, thanks to its quieter cabin, larger windows, improved cabin humidity and lower pressurisation. That means a better experience for families, and better comfort so you feel better when you get off the plane, ready to jump straight into the Disney fun.
BA vs Virgin Atlantic to Tampa: more choice from Heathrow
Disney World trip planners will now be able to choose between British Airways and Virgin Atlantic for direct Heathrow to Tampa flights departing on or after 25th October 2026.
Virgin Atlantic has operated its daily Tampa route since 3rd November 2022 using an Airbus A330-900neo. That aircraft features Retreat Suites and an updated Upper Class product, giving Virgin a very strong onboard proposition.
So, this is not just a route move. It is also a competitive shift in the market. For passengers, airline competition on the same route can only be a good thing. In theory, it should help keep a lid on fares, and that matters because flights to Florida from the UK can already feel expensive enough, especially for families travelling during school holidays.
For anyone searching BA LHR to TPA, this becomes a route worth monitoring not just for convenience, but for price.
Could this help lower Florida flight prices from the UK?
Possibly, and that is one reason I see this as a route to keep an eye on.
Tampa is already an alternative option for Disney World flights from the UK, which usually centre on Orlando International Airport. If British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are both competing directly from Heathrow, there is at least the potential for more competitive pricing on Tampa.
That does not guarantee bargain fares, of course. But if a family can save enough on flights by using the Tampa route over an MCO route, the trade-off in transfer time from Tampa to Walt Disney World may become far more worthwhile.
For cost-conscious Disney planners, that could make this route increasingly attractive and that is why this change is worth watching closely.
Is the BA Heathrow to Tampa change good news for UK Disney travellers?
On balance, I think this is a positive shift and good news for Disney World trip planners, even with the obvious downside of reduced frequency. The move to Heathrow makes the route more appealing in several ways.
Heathrow is better connected and costs are lower
Competition with Virgin Atlantic could reduce flight costs on the route
Heathrow offers better connectivity overall, as well as a reduction in drop-off costs, which matters when you’re unloading luggage for Disney World. Gatwick charges £10 for 10 minutes, plus £1 per minute after up to a time limit of 20 minutes; Heathrow charges a flat fee of £7. Small changes, like this add up for families heading to Disney World, who often have a fair amount of luggage to unload for their Orlando holiday.
Tampa has long been an interesting alternative to the far more obvious Orlando International Airport, MCO route this shift is good news for Disney planners. While Tampa is not the most direct airport for Walt Disney World, you tend to get through security faster.
But there is a downside that I want to touch on, and that is the overall reduction indirect flights to Florida from the UK as a wider trend in the UK.
Direct Flights From UK Airports to Florida Shrinking
Even though the BA Tampa reduction is relatively small, it still adds to the sense that direct route options to airports around Walt Disney World are becoming more limited for UK visitors. And that is not ideal.
With Aer Lingus ending its transatlantic Manchester to Orlando service later this month, there is a growing sense that some of the easier direct options are narrowing rather than expanding. That specific route is to MCO rather than Tampa, but the wider picture still matters: for UK families chasing easier and cheaper Florida holidays, direct access does not exactly feel like it is improving.
And that makes the search for genuinely affordable Florida flights from the UK feel more elusive than ever.
Magic In A Minute
The move of direct Tampa flights from London Gatwick Airport to London Heathrow Airport in October 2026 is a positive move overall. The new BA LHR to TPA is a route worth watching especially for UK Disney travellers trying to balance convenience, comfort and cost. Heathrow is a stronger airport than Gatwick for many travellers, and the aircraft upgrade is a real plus. Add in the possibility of better fare competition on the route, and this becomes a change that could work well for UK Disney holidaymakers prepared to think out of the box for their flights.
