The Disney Store pops up in Selfridges, Trafford Centre

The Disney Store pop-up officially opened in the Trafford Centre, Manchester’s Selfridge’s Department Store on the 29th September and we were there to see what Disney goodies were available. Was it enough to tide over keen UK Disney fans until they could get there next Walt Disney World fix, or was it just a bit lacking? Let’s find out….

If first impressions are everything, this Disney pop-up store is just a bit underwhelming. Having seen the pictures of Selfridge’s new Disney Store London pop-up it feels like Northern UK Disney fans have been short-changed. There was no sign of sorcerer Mickey and the Disney Store arch. This was less than a section and you could easily walk by.

Supplies were pretty low too and did meet expectations going in having seen the London press photos. Chatting with staff and customers on the floor we did find out more; but let’s get down to the Disney merchandise on offer right now first.

Disney Parks merch has definitely landed in the UK and probably. There were ears and pins available to buy which admittedly gives you a thrill. Finding and holding those viral sorcerer Mickey Ears definitely gave Hollywood Studios and Fantasmic vibes. Ears had clearly been popular, with the display being reduced to half its size by closing time. Ears began at £32 and sliding on a pair of Mickey Ears in Selfridges definitely got those Disney emotions rising.

The pins selection was also pretty exciting, with a range of pins from Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and Disneyland California on display. It felt like the pins had been curated for a stereotypical British market, like you would find them in the United Kingdom pavilion in EPCOT, but there are no complaints here. Limited edition Christmas pins were a delight to see, as were the Disneyland 70th Anniversary pins.

But that is really the only merch that gave this Disney adult Disney Parks vibes. The wall of soft toys gave those nostalgic 90’s Disney Store vibes and the Christmas ornaments were a bit meh. Don’t expect the selection or detail you find from the ornaments in the parks. Although the ornaments in books were nice.

Overall it was a bit underwhelming for this Disney fan girl, and the customers we chatted with felt the same. People has headed in hoping to get that Disney fix that us UK Disney fans long for to sustain us until our next Disney trip. Sarah from Manchester, said:

"“I was hoping for a jumper; it just feels a bit small. But I love the pins and I’m buying this pair of ears.”"

After chatting with some of the Selfridge’s staff, we found out some juicy information. The pop-up Disney Store in the Trafford Centre is expanding in size and getting more stock!

On the 6th October, the store will expand to cover more of the area upstairs, including the central part of floor 1 where the escalators come up into the children’s toy area. We have it on good authority that you can expect:

  • jumpers

  • mugs

  • more soft toys

  • more pins

  • more ears

  • more Christmas decorations.

And what’s more, if you’re in the Selfridge’s Unlocked loyalty membership you will get sneak peaks of what’s coming as well as access to some Disney extras, perfect for the kiddos.

We’re excited to head back and see how the Disney Store pop-up at Manchester’s Trafford Centre grows. So why not sign-up for the newsletter to make sure you don’t miss out on our upcoming review.
